Foaming Coffee Creamer is made by injecting nitrogen under pressure into a coffee whitener or dairy based powder, so it offers a creamer which not only whitens a drink but also releases the gas as foam during hydration of the end product. The drink is creamy in taste and appearance and the gas rises to the top as foam of small stable bubbles.

History
The foamer as complete product has been developed only in recent years and is a derivative from foaming creamer, which has been in existence for last 30 or so years. The foamer comes in different brand names and from manufacturers and suppliers worldwide. Today’s foamer is usually produced in powder form and looks like white to yellowish powder with rich milky taste and full-bodied flavour.

In the nutshell
Any foamer is a product of advanced chemical process and is used only in few applications. The properties of foamer’s ingredients differ according to the application. Foamers dissolving properties, may vary as certain ingredients ensure that powders also dissolve easily in cold water. The hardness and acidity of the water can also be taken into account. The principal property of a foamer is to make foam, which is the most important attribute of this product. All the other attributes are second.

The foamer is made by injecting nitrogen into the protein internal voids of carbohydrate-free soluble particles. As in the case of foamer creamer fabrication, external pressure exceeding atmospheric pressure is applied to the carbohydrate-free soluble particles.

After this procedure, the gas remains trapped into the particle voids and is released only by hydration process. When finished product is mixed with hot or cold liquid it triggers gas release which forms nice foamy layer, hence the name foamer.

There are only two types of foamers, one for hot drinks and one for cold drinks. Both have similar properties but there are few differences between them which are worth looking into.

Types of foamers

Instant hot foamer
Made from: skim milk and vegetable oils
Foam is released on hydration. The product also has whitening properties and colours the drink
Area of use: instant chocolates and cappuccino

Cold soluble foamer
Made from: vegetable oil or diary
Foam is released when product is submerged in cold liquid
Area of use: frappe coffee drinks, deserts and milkshakes

The use of foaming creamer

The area of foamer’s use is quite limited by its properties and only has culinary us unlike the common coffee creamer which is even used to simulate explosions of film sets.

There are food recipes involving foamer, mostly found on the internet, however most of recipes contain foamer as garnish ingredient designed to give better appearance to milkshake or a cold frappé coffee drink. However, after blogging has become a mainstream and became a fashion in recent years, numbers of recipes with foamer have multiplied.

Foamer is being used in food supplement shakes for those who do sports or as taste replacement in some of the drinks made for vegans. The area of foamer’s use is only limited by imagination.

Production

As in the case of foaming coffee creamer, most of the mass-produced foamer is made in Holland. Usually foamer is sold by metric tons and delivered by containers.

The principal consumers of mass-produced foamer are online dairy-selling companies. Then foamer is packed into individual and easy to use packaged and being sold on the internet to cafes, restaurants and any other food and drink establishment that use foamer.

However internet search has shown only few bulk and retail suppliers of foamer in the industry, which leads us to believe of low demand for product like foamer. One of the main reasons for such low demand is widespread use of other products of similar nature, such as foaming creamer products that are essentially the same thing as foamer, but easier and cheaper to produce.

Another reason for foamer to be known less then foaming creamer is because it is quite a recent product according to food market standards. This argument might not go unless we see that first of the coffee creamer products was developed in the 19th century and has evolved a lot since due to scientific developments in 19th and 20th centuries.

Research shows that many various factors might contribute to increase in foamer’s production. Here is a brief description of few possible outcomes in foamer’s future production.

1.Technical aspect

The rate of technological advances in food equipment sector is speeding up gradually and this result in new and more technologically advanced machines and equipment on the market. Majority of the households today are able to own advanced pieces of food-making equipment from individual baking ovens to state of the art food processors. The general advance in technology leads to appearance of machines that are easy to operate and can perform any function in food and drink domain. This will result in higher demand of pre-made ingredients for various foods and drinks, one example comes to mind – the appearance of microwave oven boosted production of pre-made microwavable foods.

2.Global marketing aspect

There has been steady increase in coffee consummation worldwide since more and more people are subjected to the influence of multinational brands like Starbucks. When Starbucks has appeared on the market in 1971 it was the only food chain café which sold drinks and coffee at the same place, but nowadays there are countless “imitation” retail coffee selling chains in various countries that lead to even bigger increase in coffee consummation. Bigger coffee and hot drinks consummation will raise the amount of coffee additives involved, from simple flavouring to chemically complex foamers.

3.International aspect

Last but not least aspect of success for future foamer’s production and consummation is absence of cultural barriers when it comes to coffee. There are few countries where coffee is considered to be a forbidden drink and this creates a unique opportunity for manufacturers of coffee and coffee additives, such as foamer and pretty much guarantees steady demand for their product within the years to come.
